How A K-Pop Comeback Works: Pre-Release, Title Track, Music Shows

With IVE, ILLIT, RIIZE and TXT all mid-cycle, this plain guide explains the K-Pop comeback terms fans use, with the dates and times that matter in India.

Monday, 26 October, 6 pm in Seoul. Three K-pop acts release new music at that exact minute: IVE, ILLIT and RIIZE. In India it is 2.30 pm on a working Monday afternoon.

If you have ever wondered why everything lands at the same hour, or what a "comeback" is when nobody went anywhere, this month's calendar explains most of it.

Comeback

In K-pop, any new release by an act that has released before is a comeback. It does not mean the group was away. IVE's Looks Can Kill, out on 26 October, is a comeback after their last album about eight months ago. TOMORROW X TOGETHER's PERFECT STORM, out on 16 November, is a comeback after an April record.

A comeback is a campaign, not a single day. It usually starts weeks earlier with an announcement, then a schedule, then concept photos, teasers and a tracklist.

The rollout

ILLIT's BREAK EVEN is a textbook example. BELIFT LAB announced it on 14 September. The tracklist came on 28 September, the promotion schedule the next day, a teaser on 5 October and three sets of concept photos on 6, 12 and 15 October. The album arrives on 26 October, six weeks after the first notice.

TXT did it with a surprise. The members played a teaser during a Weverse livestream on 27 September, BIGHIT MUSIC confirmed the date the next morning, and the tracklist went up at midnight Korea time on 24 October.

Pre-release and title track

The title track is the song the album is promoted with, the one with the music video and the TV performances. A pre-release is a song put out before the album. Sometimes it is the same song.

That is what IVE did. "Looks Can Kill" came out on 19 October as both the pre-release and the title track, a week before the six-track mini album.

Mini album, full album, single album, unit

A mini album, or EP, usually has four to seven songs. ILLIT's has four, IVE's six, TXT's six. A full album is longer, like IVE's REVIVE+. RIIZE's release on 26 October is a prologue single for a second full-length album due next spring.

A unit is a smaller group drawn from a bigger one. SEVENTEEN's Jeonghan and Joshua released DREAMSCAPE as the unit JxJ on 19 October. TXT's new album has two unit songs inside it, sung by different combinations of members.

Music show week

After release, groups perform the title track on weekly Korean television music shows, which rank songs and hand out a trophy each week. A first music show win is a milestone every agency announces. The shows post their performance clips on their official YouTube channels, which is the easiest way to watch from India, usually within hours of broadcast. A group often performs the title track on several shows in the same week, in different outfits and sometimes with a different arrangement, and the first week after release is the busiest.

Pre-orders and charts

Physical albums go on pre-order weeks ahead. TXT's Weverse Shop window runs from 20 October to 15 November, and Weverse says those sales count towards the Hanteo and Circle charts, the two Korean sales charts agencies quote for first-week numbers.

Fandom names

Every act has one, and agencies use them in official notices. IVE's fans are DIVE, SEVENTEEN's are CARAT, TXT's are MOA. When a notice says "we look forward to the continued support from all CARATs", that is who it means.

The India clock

Every Korean release in this piece lands at 6 pm KST, the usual slot. India is three and a half hours behind, so 6 pm in Seoul is 2.30 pm here. Put that on the calendar for 26 October and 16 November.
