AR Rahman On His Wonderment Tour Set List Before Mumbai And Delhi

AR Rahman says picking songs across Tamil and Hindi is his hardest job as his Wonderment Tour reaches Mumbai on 1 November and Delhi-NCR on 21 November.

AR Rahman brings The Wonderment Tour to Jio World Garden in Mumbai this Sunday, 1 November, and says the hardest part of the job is the set list: how many Tamil songs, how many Hindi, and for which city. He spoke about it in an interview with Hindustan Times published on Tuesday morning, five days before the India leg opens.

Some listeners have complained online about Tamil-heavy sets at his concerts. Rahman says he hears it from both sides.

"If you do a Hindi song in Tamil Nadu, some ask why you're putting that, or vice versa," he said. "You can't take all that into consideration when 50,000 people are sitting there."

He called choosing the list "the most difficult thing" for him, and said he now picks by asking what he would want to hear if he bought a ticket to his own show.

The songs that surprised him

Rahman's example of a crowd going where he did not expect was "Mustafa Mustafa" at his second concert in Dubai. It was before smartphones, he said, so people held up lighters, and he was playing with a 102°F fever.

The Roja and Bombay soundtracks, both of which exist in Tamil and Hindi versions, come up for the same reason. Fans argue over which version is better, and he plays to a room that holds both camps.
