In the summer of 2013 Arijit Singh was the middle name on a three-singer credit for a Shah Rukh Khan dance number. "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari", from Chennai Express, lists Sunidhi Chauhan first, then Singh, then Neeti Mohan. Thirteen years later, the first song from King went out at midnight on Khan's birthday with Singh's name at the top of the vocal credits.

Between those two songs he has sung for Khan under Vishal-Shekhar, Pritam, JAM8, Anirudh Ravichander and now Sachin-Jigar. The composer has changed more often than the voice.

The songs, by year

2013, Chennai Express. "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari", a Vishal-Shekhar track, with Singh as one of three voices. The soundtrack came out in early July, a month before the film.

2015, Dilwale. "Gerua" with Antara Mitra, for Pritam. The album was out on 17 November, a month before the film opened on 18 December.

2017, Raees and Jab Harry Met Sejal. Two films in one year. "Zaalima", with Harshdeep Kaur, came on the Raees album in January, a JAM8 composition. For Imtiaz Ali's film that summer, Pritam released "Safar" on 10 July and "Hawayein" on 26 July as separate singles, with the full soundtrack following on 3 August.

2022 to 2023, Pathaan. "Jhoome Jo Pathaan", Vishal and Shekhar again, with Sukriti Kakar, released in December 2022 ahead of the January film. Kumaar wrote it.

2023, Jawan. "Chaleya", with Shilpa Rao, released on 14 August. Anirudh Ravichander composed it and Kumaar wrote the words, the same lyricist who has written "Tu Mil Jaaye".

2023, Dunki. "Lutt Putt Gaya" on 22 November and "O Maahi" on 11 December, both for Pritam. With Dunki, Singh had a song in each of Khan's three films of 2023.

2026, King. "Tu Mil Jaaye", composed by Sachin-Jigar and sung with Madhubanti Bagchi, with Ed Sheeran on the English section. Sachin-Jigar and Singh had worked together before on "Apna Bana Le" from Bhediya in 2022.

The January statement

On 27 January Singh posted that he would not take new playback assignments. "I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey," he wrote. He added that he still had "some pending commitments" and that listeners "might get some releases this year", and said he would keep making music on his own.

Neither Singh nor the makers have said whether he sings anything else on the album, and the rest of its track list has not been announced.

He is still on the live circuit. His stadium tour opens in Ahmedabad in January, and he headlines HOME festival in Goa with Karan Aujla in December. Our report on the 'Tu Mil Jaaye' release has the full credits, and more pieces like this are on Features.
