Max Richter will play the Grand Theatre at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai at 7.30 pm on Saturday, his first concert in India. Tickets on BookMyShow start at Rs 2,750.

He is not coming alone. The American Contemporary Music Ensemble is on the bill with him, and the programme is drawn from The Blue Notebooks and one of his more recent albums. Deutsche Grammophon lists the date as part of an Asia tour. The next stop is the Palace of International Forums in Tashkent on 27 October.

The new record

The timing is tidy. Richter released While The Flood Rages on Decca on 16 October, so Mumbai gets him in release week, more or less.

The album comes out of MaddAddam, his third full-length ballet with the choreographer Wayne McGregor after Infra and Woolf Works. That production, a co-commission between the National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Opera House, is based on Margaret Atwood's trilogy of the same name. The record is not the ballet score. It runs to 15 tracks in three acts, and Richter rebuilt the material for listening at home. It opens with "Wave After Wave", built on a processed recording of the sea.

"I took the material apart and created a trajectory that makes sense just through listening," he said when the album was announced.

To launch it, the label set up listening sessions in bars and cafés with the phones put away. Seoul and Tokyo had theirs on 22 October and Berlin on 23 October. No Indian city was on that list. Tonight's concert is the next best thing, and louder.

Who is in the room

Richter's catalogue has passed four billion streams, according to his label. His score for Chloé Zhao's Hamnet earned him an Oscar nomination, and earlier this year he was made a CBE.

Away from the concert hall he has scored Dior shows and Maison Margiela campaigns, and he runs Studio Richter Mahr, on 31 acres of Oxfordshire woodland, with the visual artist Yulia Mahr. The new album was recorded there. Tonight, for once, Mumbai gets the music without the pictures.

The While The Flood Rages collector's vinyl edition follows on 27 November.
